Chapter VIII

Father, how are you doing? I heard about the assassination attempt; the minute I was done with the court affair, I came to see you.”

“My daughter, I’m doing wonderful. You take care of me despite your busy schedule.”

“Of course, father, family comes first no matter what. I should take care of you. By the way, I haven’t seen my mother.”

“She’s having fun with her friends and left me here on my own.”

“Are you being jealous, father?” I said jokingly.

“No, honey, it’s good that you are here with me. You can keep me company.” He looked me in the face, touching my head tenderly. “Father is so proud of you. Every time I look at you, I feel so guilty.”

“Father, why would you feel guilty?”

“I wanted you to be a normal child, living free, not tie you up to a throne that will make you miserable. Oh, my daughter, I’m so sorry I dragged you into this mess.”

“Father, I’m honored that you trust me with the throne and the decisions I make while on the throne. I hope you’re not angry at me for doing what I am doing. If you don’t agree, you...”

“No, Mai, you are doing wonderful. You are doing things that I wished I could have done in my time and never had the guts to do. But you, my beautiful girl, are already shaking the nation. I can die tomorrow and not regret anything because I know you will do great. Just don’t let anyone turn you into something you are not.”

I shook my head, jumped in my father’s arms, and hugged him tightly.

“Oh, Oh, that hurts.”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

We laughed, and I helped him to go back to bed. Then I went to the prison to see the assassin.

As I walked to the prison wall, I saw so many people inside; it was filthy and smelly. I was wondering what had happened there. No one recognized who I was when I entered.

We arrived at the assassin’s cell. I scanned him from head to toe; he looked gentle and loyal but fierce. They brought me a chair, and I sat down across from him, ready to question him. He started to laugh.

“So, you are better than the other one that came here before? You will not get anything from me.”

“Frank Solera, a professional assassin that never leaves a trace anywhere. How did you end up here?”

“Is that supposed to frighten me—that you know my name and what I do?”

“No, what will frighten you is that you don’t know who I am and that I know where you hid your wife and your two beautiful girls along with the whole family.”

“You are bluffing; you can’t possibly know where they are.”

“Frank, I am the ruler of this kingdom; why would it be impossible for me to know what’s going on in my own home?” I looked at his face. I started seeing the frustration, and I knew that I had hit something deep.

“You tell me, you are the young queen?” he asked with so much curiosity.
